Rick Lucas Speaks His Mind

Entrepreneur Blog

I can’t get enough of the craft beer festivals. I always meet someone new and interesting. After my attendance to the Brewsology Craft Beer Fest at the Witte Musuem in San Antonio, I met a handful of fine people and was lucky enough to get to know Dustin Teague at Cactus Land Brewing. This brewery has become one of my favorite places on the planet. Yes, I am being slightly hyperbolic, but I really do love the place. Of course, part of that comes from the fact that I bought a house in San Antonio and Cactus Land Brewing is just minutes away, so proximity has colored my bias. But only a little. Seriously, this is a great place and if you consider yourself a beer connoisseur, you have to visit. They have a great lineup of beers on tap including the Lucas, a salted pilsner. For some reason, I have great fondness for the Lucas. Feels…familiar somehow. Anyway, check out my interview with Dustin below. Again, I would like to apologize to Erica for screwing up her name. Sorry about that.

It was 103 degrees the day I interviewed Dustin. It was that dry June Texas heat. Cactus Land is located on a nice sized piece of land with a cabin and a couple of other buildings but the beauty of it is that there are a number of large trees with overhanging branches. So, even on a hot day, once you get under those trees in the shade with a cold beer in hand and just the slightest breeze picks up, it feels like a beer oasis. A respite from the harsh dry world. The location was family owned and was used as a hunting cabin or camp. It is out there a ways and you will get the feeling that not that long ago, the roads leading there were gravel or dirt.

I had a great time interviewing Dustin and, of course, I have returned several times. They have market days with a couple dozen vendors with unique products. I have found a cigar guy there that I always grab a couple stogies from whenever I get to visit. I am a big fan of the Lucas, for obvious reasons, but the Kolsch has a nice clean finish and I enjoy the Adkins Blond Ale. It has a touch of hoppy in the finish. They have typically about 20 beers on tap and offer wine slushies. They have something for everyone. They make a fine old fashioned on top of that. A have enjoyed more then one night with a cigar and an old fashioned while listening to a band. Good times. Their motto is, “Diverse Beers for Diverse People”. They have something for everyone. A unique location with a lot of character and a plethora of fine beers.

Be sure to check on their website (www.cactuslandbrewing.com), Facebook, or Instagram before you make a plan to travel to Cactus Land. They are only open on the 1st and 3rd weekends of the month so plan accordingly. You don’t want to drive out there and find out they are closed. I had a great time interviewing Dustin, and I appreciate them taking the time to put up with me. Let me know when you want to visit. I’ll meet you there!
